All other years and coaches are correct. Total record should be 697-290-24. These records are from a book published in Gainesville in 1973 entitiled "60 Years of GHS Foolball" and are considered, by Gainesville High School, to be the official records. If needed, I can have the school confrim this. If other information or documentation is needed please let me know.

Thanks for bringing those W-L records to light. ...

The W-L records on this site are not entered, but instead are the sum of the scores that have been found and recorded. So there is no way to change the W-L records without scores that confirm those W-L records. Does the book have scores?

Also, it's interesting that the book indicates Gainesville did not have a team in 1920 and 1921. Researchers have found nine game scores for those seasons. So I don't know what that means.

Hopefully by the end of this weekend, I'll get around to finishing up the 1940s scores I have for Gainesville.

Won/loss stuff: Everything here has been checked with the Gainesville News and coverage was excellent from 1923 on. It's quite possible that I may have missed something, but Gainesville was pretty systematic in the way they played games. They didn't play the week before Athens and basketball season generally started a week after Athens.

The 1906 article in the Macon Telegraph where I pulled Locust Grove Institute score from was adamant it was GHS.

The Gainesville News was iffy before 1923. I'm looking at my notebook at what I have recorded between 1910-22. 1910 has two Riverside games. There is a reference to a GHS team in 1911 but no game mentions. There are no mentions of any football in 1912 and one RMA game in 1913. 1914 has three GHS games. Nothing in 1915, one game in 1916, nothing in 1917 and 1918 (the latter isn't unusual as most schools canceled their seasons). Three games in 1919, four in 1920 and four in 1921. 1921 also has mention of a B team who was to play Commerce. In 1922, the paper actually printed a full schedule, but only has scores for five of the eight games they mentioned. In 1923, the team pulls off the first of three great seasons and paper starts noticing (the fans, however, don't start really noticing until 1928, as no stands existed at City Park until then).

Unfortunately, for almost every athletic program out there, we're more accurate in almost 2012 than we were in 2000 or 1990 or 1973 or 1950. There's so much more available and a community to check it. I've seen a lot of sports record romanticism, some of it purposeful, some of it completely accidental. The GIA is loaded with it, Valdosta High will still argue about the 1929 season, and even my alma mater printed highly inaccurate 1950s and 1960s basketball won/loss records in souvenir booklets a mere 10 years later.
Eventually, I'm going to go through reels of the Gainesville Eagle. Mostly, it'll be to check for missing Riverside stuff, but maybe it'll shed light on early Gainesville, too.

Sure, post the scores. We also need dates, but we'll take anything you've got.

I've done more research in the book I mentioned above. The book was put together by WGGA radio in cooperation with Gainesville High School. The bbok states that Gainesville played football as early as 1908. It indicates that prior to 1910, a captain was elected by the players and he was responsible for picking and coaching the team. In 1910, E. D. Kenyon, Sr. became the first Gainesville High Football coach. They did not play in 1910 due to an injury to a player in practice. Mothers would not allow their sons to play. In 1913, they started playing with coach Kenyon. The book also explains that they played in 1915, 1917, 1918, 1919, 1921, 1928, 1932, and 1934; but could not confirm games and scores so those seasons are not included in the book. I will follow with games and scores of the years I listed above.

OK, got all the scores in that we could reconcile against our established research.
